A friend of mine who is a writer (an actual writer – not like me who just posts shit) had a down phase. He is a fan of the works of Mr. Ernest Hemingway. To pay a tribute to this great author, my friend tried to adopt his writing style and to produce a piece of written work not worse than the works of the latter. When he gave me his manuscript I compared it to Hemingway’s some typical stylistic elements. It was good, someone who is not a specialist in Hemingway’s works wouldn’t recognize the difference. But for someone who knows literature it was more than obvious. Not the writing style but the depths of the thoughts could not be reached. I told my friend my view and he explained that a couple other reviewers had a similar opinion on it.
SPIRAL DOWNWARDS
The more my friend tried to alter his work, to reach his goal, the more he got upset and to be honest, his manuscript got just worse. His physical as well as mental condition declined with every meeting we had.
I am not a friend of giving up, that is nothing a man should do. But I stand for productive way of life. It was clear to me that he could not finish his work being that absentminded. I told him to give that project a certain amount of time and to try do the best within the set time frame. No matter how the result would be he would have to stop working after the time ran out. After the deadline he would need to burn the bridges to that project and its fire would light up a new way. Sometimes we are not big enough for our wishes. He is a young and not highly experienced writer. To reach the necessary quality and reach the wanted goal he would need to grow. The deadline is December 31st 2016. By that time he either has a tribute work for Hemingway or he doesn’t but at least he knows when this phase will end.
